I’ve always had a pretty strong love/hate relationship with lipstick. I love it once I find the perfect shade, but I have the hardest time shopping for it. I hate sampling it in stores, and usually am pretty hesitant to ask for help. The choices are overwhelming, and I typically end up getting home with a shade that looks terrible once its on my lips. In order to help narrow down the selection, and have a better chance of coming home with a lipstick you might actually wear, I did some research, and put together a simple flow chart of how to choose the best shade for you.
Start with your skin tone: fair, medium, olive, or dark. Then, determine whether you have a cool skin tone or warm. This is determined by looking at the veins inside of your wrist. If they appear blue, you are cool. If they have a greenish tint, you are warm.
Perfect Red Lip: For fall, I’ve been all about putting together some classic go-to looks. These have either been monochromatic looks in black or gray, or opting for denim and an oversized white button down. I’ve been searching for a good red lip to pair with these looks, and found the perfect, moisturizing shade, with YSL’s “Rouge In Danger” No. 4 Rouge Volupte Lip Shine.
Bubble Bath Bar: I had a co-worker tell me about these bars that you crumble under running water that produces the best bubble bath. Being a bath-fanatic, I had to try it out. I’ve had super bubble-filled baths before, but that is only a result of me squeezing half a bottle of the bubble bath into the tub. My co-worker was right – this was my new favorite bath add in! Just crumble off a corner, and I’ve got a tub full of bubbles. It also smells great, is all natural, and leaves your skin feeling silky smooth.
Dry Texturizing Spray: After getting bangs, I started to notice how quickly my hair falls flat (especially after being pushed down under a floppy felt hat). Although I have fairly thick hair, I realized it was still necessary to use a dry texturizing spray to give my bangs and the hair framing my face a little bit of extra volume. This is a dry spray that goes on after your hair is styled (that smells amazing), and gives you hair just a little bit of a wind blow, natural finish all day.

Summer beauty is always a challenge for me. Between the humidity which makes my hair go crazy, and the temperatures that practically melt make up right off of my face, it’s always easier to throw my hair up into a bun and go sans-make up. Shocking as it may be (or not shocking at all), this isn’t typically my best look. Luckily, I’ve picked up a few products lately that have made my beauty routine a million times easier, and have helped me survive the last couple of months.
Paul Mitchell ‘Super Skinny’ Hair Serum – This has been a lifesaver this summer. My hairdresser introduced me to it a couple months back, and I’ve been using it non-stop. It’s part de-frizz, part shine, but basically – it’s magic in a bottle. A little dab is all I need, and it turns my thick, frizz prone mane into something that can actually hold up to the humidity.
Stila ‘Stay All Day’ Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner – On days that I actually consider myself some-what pulled together, eyeliner is a must. I like to apply just a thin line on the outer half of my upper eyelid, just for a little pop and definition. This eyeliner by Stila is perfect for summer – the marker tip makes for easy and quick application, and the waterproof black liner stays in place all day and is dramatic enough that I sometimes don’t even have to pair it with mascara.
Maybelline ‘Baby Lips’ Lip Balm in Cherry Me – I’d read about the wonder behind this simple lip balm so many places, and didn’t believe that a chap stick that was so inexpensive would be so magical. But I was wrong. Baby Lips is now my go-to lip balm – it’s soft and light, with just a perfect hint of color. It’s not sticky, it moisturizes my lips, and it stays on for a surprisingly long time. In the summer when minimal makeup is absolutely necessary, this balm and some blush is just about all I need.
Springs Eden Bar Soap in ‘Amber Bergamot‘ – When I’m all hot and sticky in the summertime, the last thing I want to do is drench myself in a heavy perfume. I’ve had this bar of soap sitting on my bathroom counter for months (it was much too pretty to unwrap), saving it for just the right time. My sister gave me an extra bar of it as a bridesmaid gift, so I started using it, and it is the perfect summer scent. It’s light and floral and not too stuffy, and stays with me throughout the day after I wash my hands, allowing me to skip the perfume and still smell flowery-fresh.
